From the Editor

From a print-media point of view, what were the biggest national issues concerning higher education, other than Washington, D.C. happenings last year?  I’d vote for sexual misconduct on campus, free-speech issues that were really about the attempts to deny free speech, and the hurricanes that devastated Puerto Rico and the surrounding islands.  The first issue is still growing nationwide as the spotlight moves from one industry to another, outside of higher education.  The second seemed largely confined to higher education until events in Virginia attracted a national spotlight—and now it seems likely that freedom of expression will be under fire beyond the campus gate. The natural disasters in the Caribbean became a political issue before the wind subsided, because of Puerto Rico’s political realities and a lasting political has not yet emerged.  How many barrels of ink will be devoted to these stories in 2018? As ever, it all depends on what else happens.  But none are likely to go away any time soon.
