You Asked . . . We Listened!

You asked for quality education and networking that doesn't take you away from your daily routine for too long, while fitting into your department's budget. The 2019 Leadership Academy is a perfect fit.  This 9.5 hour competency-based Academy is designed using NAEP's Procurement Academy Tier III and is offered at the rate of $210 per person. This Academy will be conducted directly following the District VI Regional Meeting.

This competency-based Leadership Academy is offered in only 9.5 hours for existing and emerging procurement professionals who manage a department and/or people within the Procurement department. The competency focus is on Relationship Building, Strategic Agility, and Leadership.

Competency-based Education

The 2019 Leadership Academy is a competency-based certificate course of study mapped to NAEP’s Competency Model. We have used the NAEP Competency Model to align the Workshop to specific, measurable objectives and outcomes (use your NAEP member login to view). As a result, you can develop skills and increase capabilities in competencies expected of your position and experience level within higher education. Attendees will complete an assessment at the end of the Workshop to receive their certificate.



The Leadership Academy includes a webinar, Institutional Procurement Policies: A Legal Perspective, presented by Robert Haverkamp, Esq.

Learning objectives include:

  • Understand Procurement Policy Principles
  • Identify the elements of Procurement Policy Principles
  • Apply the elements of Procurement Policy Principles in your practice

The live webinar is scheduled for Thursday, October 3rd at 2:00 pm EST. If you aren't able to attend the live webinar, it will be available to view online through October 31st. 



Nichol Luoma

Vice President, University Business Services, Sustainability Operations Officer & Chief Procurement Officer, Arizona State University


Nichol is the National Association of Educational Procurement Past President (2019-2020). She is responsible for multiple operations at Arizona State University including supply chain (procurement and materials management), auxiliaries, parking and transit, sustainability practices, risk management, physical security initiatives and environment health & safety. In addition to the national board of directors, Nichol has served in leadership positions in the Pacific region to include President in 2015.

Nichol is a faculty member for NAEP and the Western Association of College and University Business Officers (WACUBO). She has nearly two decades of operations management experience and has held the following positions: Vice President of Operations for Boon Inc. and Keen Distribution; Senior Supply Chain Consultant at Clarkston Consulting; and multiple supply chain roles at Intel Corporation. Nichol holds a bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management from ASU (Summa Cum Laude), where she was honored as the Outstanding Graduating Senior for WP Carey College of Business and also holds a Master’s in Business Administration (Summa Cum Laude) from Duke University, where she was honored as a Fuqua Scholar.


Ted Johnson

Associate Controller, Integrated Supply Chain, and Chief Procurement Officer at the University of California San Diego

Ted is responsible for all aspects of supply management at the university including Strategic Procurement, Accounts Payable and Receiving and Distribution. He is also responsible for managing satellite procurement operations at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, campus housing and dining, and facilities management. Additionally, he oversees Student Financial Solutions, which includes Student Business Services and Cashiers.

Prior to joining UC San Diego in 2006, Ted held the position of Director of Global Integrated Supply Chain for Sony Electronics and Director of Procurement for Hitachi Home Electronics, which included international assignments in Japan and Mexico. After receiving his BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara, Ted was awarded a fellowship from the Japanese Ministry of Education to pursue his Master’s degree in International Business Management at the University of Tsukuba. 


Christie Ward

The Impact Institute


Christie Ward, CSP A certified speaking professional (CSP) of over 30 years, an expert in Accelerated Learning techniques, a top-notch trainer and personal coach, and the best at helping you improve your personal impact! Winner of the ATD Best Practices award in 2004 for training in Colorado, she is the past president of both the National Speaker’s Association in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Association for Talent Development (ATD) serving on the National Board for ATD (an organization of 40,000 globally) from 2011-2012. She is one of only nine global trainers who certifies Master Trainers through ATD. She delivers training to corporations such as AT&T, J&J, and IHS, and federal clients such as the USAF Air Mobility Command and Department of Interior. Non-profit organizations she serves include the US Olympic committee and Goodwill. She speaks at conferences for leaders in both profit and non-profit groups. She has spoken Internationally in Singapore, Taiwan and Poland.


Christie did her undergraduate work at the University of Southern California, and her graduate studies in Adult Education at Portland State University in Oregon. Christie presented at the Regional NAEP District VI in September 2014, with both a 2-hour keynote and a breakout session. She also facilitated the 2015 Leadership Forum in Atlanta, GA and leadership segments for the 2016 NAEP Procurement Academy – Tier III.




Robert Haverkamp, Esq. (retired)

The Ohio State University


Robert retired from The Ohio State University in 2010, having served the University as a lawyer and administrator for 38 years, most recently as Associate General Counsel (and leader of the business and real estate practice group) since 2006. Previously, he held a number of positions in the administration, including Director of Real Estate and Research Park Operations (1991-99) and Assistant Vice President for Business and Finance (1996-2006). His principal areas of practice have been governance and board operations, business affairs, real estate, land use regulation, transactional law, enterprise risk management, and affiliated entities.

He also has been involved in establishing, advising, and serving on the boards of a number of other non-profit organizations, including several pioneering LGBT organizations. During the 1980s, Robert also was very involved in developing policies and advising with respect to emerging AIDS legal issues. Robert received his Bachelor of Arts degree from The Ohio State University in 1968 and his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, also from Ohio State in 1971.

Refund requests must be submitted in writing to NAEP. Cancellations postmarked or received on or before September 1, 2019, are entitled to a full refund minus a $50 processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be granted for cancellations made after September 2, 2019.
